While the web app is ideal for lightweight cross-platform access, the desktop client is the complete power tool: it provides local file read/write AI tool calling, an integrated PowerShell terminal, double-click .md file associations, and full 100% offline reliability outside browser sandboxes.
Is NoteLoom Desktop free? Will it force a subscription later?
Core note-taking and management capabilities in NoteLoom Desktop are permanently free, with no document limits, no feature paywalls, and no credit card required. You can confidently rely on it as your primary knowledge vault.
Will AI read/write operations corrupt or delete my local notes?
Never. NoteLoom features a dedicated "✎ Approve each change" safety gate: the AI assistant defaults to read-only search; whenever it proposes creating or modifying a file, it must present a clear diff and wait for your manual approval. You always retain final control.
Are my notes uploaded to NoteLoom servers after installing?
Never. NoteLoom strictly adheres to local-first architecture. All documents remain stored as plain text on your local disk. When using the AI chat, note snippets communicate directly with model providers (Anthropic, DeepSeek, etc.) via your personal API key, completely bypassing NoteLoom.
How do I configure API keys for AI models?
Go to Settings → AI Chat in the desktop app, and enter your personal API key for Anthropic Claude, DeepSeek, or Zhipu GLM. Keys are kept in your local secure storage and connect directly to official endpoints.
Will NoteLoom Desktop conflict with my Obsidian or VS Code setup?
Not at all. NoteLoom reads and writes plain Markdown files without proprietary databases or file locks. You can open the same folder simultaneously in NoteLoom, Obsidian, and VS Code with seamless live synchronization.
Will NoteLoom Desktop support macOS or Linux?
The initial release prioritizes deep Windows 10/11 system integration. Dedicated macOS and Linux native clients are actively planned. In the meantime, Mac and Linux users can access the NoteLoom web app (app.noteloom.cc) in Chrome, Edge, or Arc with identical core note-taking capabilities.
